eMobility Charging Ecosystem Opportunities Study in Uganda
GreenBee conducted a feasibility study, aiming to assess the viability of establishing an electric vehicle charging ecosystem in Uganda, in collaboration with Kiira Motors Corporation and the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development. The study focused on transitioning to electric mobility to combat air pollution in Kampala and support Uganda's sustainable transport objectives. Our comprehensive insights and recommendations, drawn from the study, supperted the stakeholders in definining a clear path towards maturing the ecosystem.
Kiira Motors has embarked on an ambitious journey to assemble its own electric buses, which initially started with a fleet of four. In collaboration with the Ministry, we supported Kiira Motors in identifying the best use cases for these buses. We evaluated the technical and commercial feasibility of implementing an electric vehicle (EV) charging ecosystem for KMC buses in Uganda, identifying scalable business models and optimal charging locations and routes for maximum efficiency. Our analysis of existing EV facilities enabled us to design effective management systems tailored to local needs. We assessed KMC's capabilities and specific regional requirements, providing targeted recommendations for collaboration, policy implementation, and funding strategies to advance electric mobility in Uganda. The study laid the groundwork for a strategic roadmap toward implementing an electric vehicle charging ecosystem in Uganda. Our efforts included developing a comprehensive roadmap for charging infrastructure, proposing viable business models for the buses, and crafting a strategy for other modes of transportation through 2026. These insights and recommendations were shared with key stakeholders, including the Ministry of Energy, the Ministry of Transport, and Makerere University, through a series of workshops and presentations.
